Hear me read the first two pages from each of the ten short stories in my Mindscapes collection

Click on the YouTube video screen shot below to hear me read the first two pages from each of the ten short stories in my Mindscapes short story collection. Unlike the professionally produced audiobook version of the book that is read by professional voice artist Dale Wilcox, this is a simple cold reading by me of the first two pages of each short story with no breaks or revisions–warts and all. It was a fun way to spend a couple of hours putting this together between doing “real” work. I hope you will enjoy it. (BTW a preview of the audiobook version of the book sold by Audible and Amazon is available at https://www.audible.com/author/Victor-D-Lopez/B001KMII74 or, better yet, download the audiobook free with a free, no obligation one-month Audible membership). The book is available through all major retailers in paperback and ebook versions, and much longer previews are available at Amazon.com and other retailers. The same is true of the individual short stories in the collection.

Remembering Our Fallen on Memorial Day

Freedom is your legacy,
Paid for with your precious life,
Far from home and family,
In wars both wise and unwise.

I walk in light thanks to you,
Teach, write, speak, think without fear,
And our flag flies proud and true,
Beacon of hope through the years.

I stand proudly for our flag,
Hand over heart as I sing,
Our Anthem whene’r it plays,
As my voice cracks and eyes tear.

Emotions run high for me,
Not from empty foolish pride,
But because in her I see,
Your most poignant sacrifice.

Freedom comes not from its wish,
Nor peace from prayers on their own,
They come from soldiers like you,
Who selflessly gave their all.

I carry you in my heart,
Every day of every year,
The debt I owe you cannot,
Be repaid in words or tears.

Rest in peace, beloved dead,
May God grant you honors due,
Today I will fly our flag,
And in it always see you.

Convocation for New Distinguished Professorships at Hofstra University's Frank G. Zarb School of Business

The announcement was sent out yesterday for the convocation installing the new distinguished professors in Hofstra University's Frank G. Zarb School of Business. I so wish I could invite my mom and dad to attend, though I know they will be there in spirit as they are always with me. It will be a bittersweet day for me as my unsung heroes never received their due acknowledgment in life and I have had more than my fair share of acknowledgment for little more than doing my job. I am nothing. They were everything.

Recent television interview by ABC7 (Washington, D.C. ABC News affiliate)

Gene Maccarrone, my good friend and the co-author of several articles, and I were interviewed recently by Lisa Fletcher, senior investigative reporter for the Washington D.C. ABC television affiliate as part of her investigative report on the use of traffic cameras in Washington, D.C. She reached out to us after reading one of our articles on traffic enforcement by camera in her research. Reports that aired earlier this week feature some of my comments. You can find a link to the video that as aired as well as a transcript here: https://lnkd.in/emW7v2Q. I have a face best suited for radio these days and cringe at seeing myself on camera on this and on prior videos Hofstra has posted of me from a few years back. I hope some clips from Gene’s comments from our interview will make it to a future report as he is a handsome guy who, unlike his co-author, will never scare children during prime time. For the record, I know the proper usage of “number” and “amount” but misspoke twice in the clips intending to say “the highest number of fines” and “the highest amount [of dollars] in fines.” Cameras and bright lights melt the brain.
